How to Maintain a Yard Drain

Leaves, mulch, silt, and other yard debris occasionally cause clog of drain pipes. Usually this drain works much like a floor drain in a garage or basement floor, collecting standing water and directing it to the street, storm drain, or other drainage area.

1. Clear Debris

Remove as much debris by hand as possible, sweeping frequently. If the drain has many branches, make sure to clean each branch pipe as much as possible. Remove all debris including rocks, dirt, leaves and litter. 2. Check the Terminal Outlet

Often garden plumbing ends near the curb of the street or elsewhere in the yard, where the slope can safely carry the water away. It is very necessary to check the terminal area. If the drain ends in a dry well, lift the top of the well and inspect the basin for debris or excess soil. Remove any material that could cause a blockage.

3. Flush the drain pipes

Use a hose to flush the drain. Blockages can be prevented by inserting a high-pressure water gun as far as possible from the collection basin into the drain, then turning on the water and flushing away any remaining debris.
